When a major crack happens in an RV, the first thought is to replace the glass. That isn’t always the best option, especially if the windshield can be repaired. There are several reasons to repair a windshield instead of replacing it, but the biggest one is that most insurance companies cover the entire cost of the repair. This means that 100% of the repair will be paid by the company with no out-of-pocket costs. This isn’t always true when a window is replaced in an RV.
Why should an RV owner get a chip in the window repaired as soon as possible? It is easy for these chips to turn in to a crack. Repairing a chip will strengthen the area around the hole, making sure that the glass doesn’t start to spread across the windshield. Getting a chip repaired should happen as soon as possible, especially on the large windows that Recreational Vehicles typically have installed. A small patch should be applied to the chip prior to repair so that it doesn’t spread in to a crack.
That being said, chips that are in a critical part of the windshield should not be replaced. Not all repairs are totally clear. Even the smallest blind spot or image distortion can lead to an accident. When a chip is in the line of sight of the driver, it is recommended that the whole windshield be replaced. This is for safety concerns for both the driver and others on the road.
Unfortunately, not all repairs are just for chips. Sometimes a crack is unavoidable. This doesn’t mean the windshield has to be replaced, but the crack can be repaired. If the crack is in an area of the windshield that is in the direct line of sight by the driver, the whole windshield should be replaced. This is to keep both the driver and others on the road safe.
When getting the crack repaired, make sure to schedule it for a nice day. If the weather is to cold, the resin used to repair the crack won’t harden. If the weather is too hot, the resin will work at a faster pace. Both of these mean the crack will remain in a partially repaired state. When this happens, it might be impossible to finish the repair and the windshield will need to be replaced.
